The FDA approved two additional new drugs to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) with the help of a special PPI. The FDA also approved three additional new drugs to treat chronic idiopathic reflux disease (CID).
“This is a significant step in the fight against acid reflux, which can lead to heartburn and other acid-related symptoms,” says Dr. John C. Smith, M. D., director of the Division of Gastroesophageal Care at the Cleveland Clinic.
The two new drugs will be used together in combination with the first-line therapy for GERD. The combination therapy may be used once every three months, for patients with reflux symptoms. The combination therapy is the only drug that will be taken when patients have heartburn or other symptoms of reflux.
The new drugs are designed to treat acid-related symptoms in adults, adolescents, and children. All three of these patients have symptoms of acid reflux, and the combination therapy is expected to reduce symptoms of acid reflux in the pediatric population. This is the first new drug to treat acid reflux in adults.
“The combination therapy can help provide relief from chronic acid reflux,” says Dr. Nissen. “We also believe that once a drug is used, it should be taken on an as-needed basis, and the patient should be monitored for symptoms of acid reflux.”
